Tomb Raider Review: 4 Ups & 5 Downs
3. It Wastes A Great Supporting Cast
There are so many great actors in this movie, and most of them sadly don't get remotely close to their due. Aside from lead Vikander, Dominic West gets a surprisingly substantial role as Lara's father Lord Richard Croft, showing up in plentiful flashbacks but largely just spouting that creaky aforementioned dialogue.
Elsewhere, the brilliant Kristin Scott Thomas shows up for a glorified, totally forgettable cameo as Croft Holdings associate Ana Miller, Walton Goggins is never able to rise above being a generic baddie, Daniel Wu is thoroughly wasted as Lara's new pal Lu Ren (being kept out of the action for huge parts of the movie), and even Nick Frost and Jaime Winstone are just here to play two wacky, out-of-place comic relief pawn shop owners.
It's a paycheck movie for most of the actors involved, clearly, but it's a shame the script didn't give them just a little more to work with.
