Tony Scott's 10 Greatest Films

8. Beverly Hills Cop 2 (1987)

Though not a touch as good as the first Beverly Hills Cop - which upon release earned itself an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, as well as worldwide recognition for comic Eddie Murphy - this sequel delivered the same thrills and high gag-rate, milking Murphy's inherent quick-wit for all it was worth. Though not turning in quite the same profits as the original, it still made an excellent $299m against a $20m budget, even if the critical reception was rather muted compared to the original. Still, it has kinetic action sequences that perfectly complemented Murphy's rat-a-tat dialogue, making it surprising that Scott and Murphy in fact never teamed up again. The film's signature tune, "Shakedown", was also nominated for an Academy Award.
