https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhUbD59ITio After filming his biggest action hit that helped launch his career in other places in Asia (Police Story), Golden Harvest decided that it was time to try to get Jackie Chan noticed in Hollywood again (they had previously tried to spark up Western interest in Chan with films like Battle Creek Brawl and Cannonball Run to no avail). Chan was very unhappy with the experience as he went from one set where he was in total control and could do action his way, to working with American producers and choreographers that told him that Hollywood had very little interest in his style and were looking on creating a more traditional Dirty Harry action flick. The Protector bombed at the box office and Golden Harvest (who owned the distribution rights to Asia) was very skeptical about releasing the movie. Chan decided to re-edit the entire film and re-shoot every action scene in his own style (even adding more action scenes into the movie). For the final climatic battle, he had to get Karate champion Bill Superfoot Wallace back to Hong Kong to reshoot all of his scenes. The final outcome is pretty glorious. In conclusion, The Protector is NOT a bad movie given you watch the right cut. It would take ten more years for Jackie Chan to be appreciated in Hollywood (Rumble in the Bronx) and unlike his previous attempts, it was the first time he was completely and creatively in charge.
