Top 10 Rising British Directors

3. Ben Wheatley

url-10 Ben Wheatley is an interesting director - he tackled the gangster genre for his debut Down Terrace, he followed it up with the grim horror movie, Kill List and his latest feature was a dark comedy. He seems impossible to categorise as his style changes from film-to-film and he likes to experiment whilst still growing in experience, though despite his tender age, he is a very confident filmmaker. So far, Kill List remains his crowning achievement as the impossibly dark and claustrophobic film is a perfect example of how to build tension. He reinvented horror film with the piece and it was the best film of its genre since Let the Right One In. His latest film, Sightseers, also furthered British comedy as it is dark but lovable and most importantly, incredibly funny. He's a unique talent and has become a revelation despite limited commercial success, but since Sightseers was loved at the Cannes Film Festival, Wheatley has been receiving more attention and is set to direct his first American feature on a multi-million pound budget. All the signs point to Wheatley having a huge worldwide breakout success with his next film.
