Toy Story 4 Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

Ups...

8. Forky Is One Of The Series' Best Characters

Toy Story 4 introduces a host of new characters, by far the most intriguing and memorable of whom is Forky (Tony Hale), a spork brought to life by Bonnie (Madeleine McGraw) at the start of the film, and who struggles to come to terms with the fact that he's a toy rather than a utensil.

Forky ultimately comes to represent some of Toy Story 4's most compelling themes, with his insistence that he's "trash" reflecting self-esteem issues, anxiety and depression, but also one's struggle to embrace their own identity, whatever it may be.

On a broader level, Forky begs the audience to consider, "What is a toy?", a tantalising question enlivened by Tony Hale's fantastically nervy performance, walking a delicate line where his existential quandaries are genuinely empathetic without ever proving irritating.

Forky's already become an icon for millennials online, and the film itself absolutely cements why. With his easy relatability in an often grim and confusing world, Forky is an easy all-timer character for the series.
