Transformers 4: 10 Things That Sucked

2. Swearing & Adult Content

Transformers Age Of ExtinctionParamount PicturesThe Transformers movies are all rated PG-13, which gives them a massive audience base, as they can at once appeal to both adolescent teenagers and younger kids who might be accompanied by a parent. The problem is that Bay clearly finds himself broached between both demographics, delivering the rock 'em, sock 'em thrills that will wow the 8-year-olds in the audience, while also including crude sex gags to make the hormonal lads laugh. It's a tough dilemma, and one that these movies have never really resolved that well: who can forget the embarrassing moment when Sam Witwicky's mother ingests a pot brownie and starts acting like a psychopathic maniac? Or the painful masturbation-related gags in the first movie? Well, AoE boasts its own share of borderline-inappropriate jokes, mostly related to sex, and then there's the fair incidence of bad language as well, that gives the movie something of an identity crisis as it's pulled mercilessly in two directions at once. We're not prudes, but for us the joy of Transformers stems from our childhood association with the original TV series, and if these movies retained some of that innocence, we'd probably enjoy them a little bit more. Alright, so the 1986 Transformers animated movie had that infamous "Oh s***" moment, but nobody ever dropped an F-bomb as happens in this movie, and it just seems wildly out of place with what is supposed to be fantastical wish fulfillment.
