Transformers 5: 10 Changes That Need To Happen

2. The Transformers Need More Character Development

No, giving each Transformer a distinguishable appearance and memorable voice actor does not constitute good character development. The special effects team for the films can make Optimus and Co. look and sound as flashy as they want, but without any form of meaningful character development or progression, it's extremely hard for anyone to relate to them or understand their actions. Who created the Transformers? Why are they sentient? Why does Optimus protect humans when he could just as easily subjugate them like Megatron? Do they have leaders, family, emotional attachments, even memories? Some of these have been explored on a minor level in the films, but there needs to be some elaboration on why the Transformers are what they are and do what they do. The biggest culprit to date is the appearence of the Dinobots in Age Of Extinction. We're told in the film that they're legendary knights from eons past. What were they knights of? Were they protecting something or someone? How were they captured? Endless questions without answers (unless you're a fan of the comics). We need motives Mr. Bay!
