Transformers: Age Of Extinction - 10 Reasons We’re Freaking Out

8. The Female Characters (Might) Be Better Portrayed

Tessa, the teenage daughter of Mark Wahlberg's character , has a race car driving boyfriend who will (obviously) be drafted by said father to rescue said girlfriend. OK, so this isn't a terribly advanced move when it comes to the Transformers franchise and its problems with fleshing out women's story arcs. Considering how the female leads in the previous films were basically shrieking sex objects for the hero's indirect conquest, the female leads in this film seem to be a MUCH bigger step up. A father trying to protect his daughter is a much more compelling story than a hero chasing his damsel, because we've seen our previous hero always walk off into the sunset his "main squeeze" as a reward for a job well done. Though from the looks of it, our hero's daughter is nabbed for a portion of the film - waiting to be rescued. Knowing Bay, and knowing how these stories sometimes play out, we wouldn't be surprised if Tessa gets a bit of a moment in the spotlight when it comes to helping combat the Deception menace.
