True Story Of The 8 Best Spider-Man Movies Never Made
4. 2010 - Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4
Following the Cameron phase, Spider-Man's cinematic woes mostly came to an end. After the idea of a Venom spin-off was thrown around in the late '90s (which would've starred Dolph Lundgren as Eddie Brock, pitting him against Carnage), Spidey was treated to a successful trio of movies by director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire.
But after Spider-Man 3 debuted in 2007, things took a downturn once again.
While Raimi's Spider-Man 4 was put into active development (Spider-Man 3 was a huge box-office hit, so there was no reason to not continue the series), it was plagued with issues, and ultimately never came to pass.
Raimi was disappointed with Spider-Man 3, and wanted to go out on a high note with the fourth movie. Writers like David Koepp, James Vanderbilt, Gary Ross and David Lindsay-Abaire each took stabs at the script, with the story said to include villains like Vulture and Black Cat. In 2009, Raimi stated that sets were being designed and crew members were being hired, while Sony even set a 2011 date for the flick. With Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst also set to star, things looked pretty rosy.
But then, the project fell apart. In January 2010, Deadline reported that Spider-Man 4 had been cancelled, with the reason being that Raimi felt like he couldn't hit that 2011 date while also making a movie he was proud of.
It was a sad day for Spider-Man fans, but Sony started dancing on Spider-Man 4's grave as soon as it had been buried, announcing, on the same day, that they would be rebooting the franchise in summer 2012.
