10 Typecast Movie Roles That Totally Ruined Major Plot Reveals

1. Ian McDiarmid €“ Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

The Big Reveal Ian McDiarmid's Senator Palpatine is the Emperor/Darth Sidious, the Big Bad of the original trilogy. Why It€™s So Obvious George Lucas took typecasting to a whole new level when he cast the same guy to play the same role he€™d played sixteen years earlier, and expected us not to guess who Palpatine would become. Good job. Was it a nice touch to have McDiarmid come back and play a younger version of the character he€™d played in Return of the Jedi? Sure. But it came at a high price. When the 'big reveal' finally comes in the prequel trilogy that Palpatine would go on to become the Emperor, it€™s not remotely surprising because Lucas has the same actor playing them both. It would have felt like much more of a twist if they€™d brought in someone else to play the younger version of the character. If the make-up from Return Of The Jedi made it a little less obvious, McDiarmid's voice should have tipped you off. It€™s basically the same, only with a little more Parseltongue in Episode VI.
