20 Awesome 90s Movies That Deserve More Love

14. Lord of Illusions (1995)

Lord Of Illusions
United Artists

Adapted from his own short story "The Last Illusion," Clive Barker's gory, psychologically layered neo-noir horror Lord of Illusions is a gnarly sight to behold.

Following an occult detective (Scott Bakula) drawn deep into a supernatural mystery with plenty of twists hiding many secrets, Barker's third stint behind the camera finds the iconic writer crafting a multi-layered story that doubles as both a tantalising detective yarn and a horrid deep dive into paranormal madness.

With brilliant performances from Bakula and co-stars Famke Janssen and Kevin J. O'Connor, Lord of Illusions sure looks like a horror flick from the '90s - all shaky cameras, poor effects, and overblown villains - but it still soars high as a frightening thriller full of big ideas and bigger worlds.

Clive Barker has been a beloved writer and filmmaker for five decades now, and whilst everyone knows him for Hellraiser, that same amount of love should be thrown on Lord of Illusions, too.

I get to write about what I love, which is cool. You'll typically find me in front of a TV, or hunkered down behind a book, or dreaming of things far away. Be good to each other. Find my other writings here: https://allthethingsineversaid.substack.com/
