20 Underrated Recent Movies You Might Have Missed

Caught Stealing is exactly the sort of movie that's an unfortunately tough sell with theatrical audiences nowadays - a mid-budget genre film without a ton of high-wire, effects-driven action.

And so, Darren Aronofsky's latest effort came and went in an instant last August, flopping at the box office before being sent all-too-quietly to streaming.

But this is frankly one of the past year's most unsung and unexpected movies.

Aronofsky, best known for his bleak, maximalist work, basically turns in a peak-era Guy Ritchie joint here - a crackling, blackly comedic crime thriller led by a rarely better Austin Butler.

With its evocative '90s New York setting and well-balanced sandblast of cocksure humour and brutal violence, Caught Stealing confirms Aronofsky to somehow be an even more versatile talent than we already knew.

It's hardly as ambitious as the filmmaker's most acclaimed work, but it deserves a far better fate than tumbling into the abyss of movie thumbnails you endlessly scroll past on your streaming service of choice.
