20 Upcoming Movies That Just Got Cancelled
These movies aren't happening after all.
Hollywood is one heck of an unpredictable beast, where for every film that ends up entering production, there are several that never start rolling cameras.
And with potentially hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, the industry's cautiousness is understandable to a point, even if the current originality-averse climate doesn't seem particularly conducive to a healthy film industry long-term.
With all this in mind, there are more interesting movies being scrapped every month than anyone can reasonably keep up with, especially with so many of them being quietly cancelled in the hope that few people even notice.
But poring back over the past few months, these 20 films have all been binned one way or another.
Perhaps they very publicly fell flat because the previous film flopped at the box office, someone associated with the production formally announced their cancellation, or industry insiders did us all a favour and confirmed it themselves.
The reasons for these films being scrapped are many and complex, ranging from budgetary concerns to creative misgivings, though in a few instances we still don't know precisely why they aren't going ahead...
20. Blade
It was way back in July 2019 that Mahershala Ali was confirmed to be playing Blade in a reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and honestly, could you imagine anyone better to take up the Daywalker's mantle from Wesley Snipes?
Though Ali made an off-screen voice cameo as the character in 2021's Eternals, development on Blade's MCU debut was sluggish in the years that followed.
The project cycled through several directors and innumerable writers, which combined with Hollywood strike action and creative tussles between Marvel Studios and Ali, caused its release date to be pushed back multiple times.
In recent years it'd been suggested that Blade may have been quietly cancelled, and this past July MCU producer Kevin Feige and Ali both confirmed that Blade was indeed dead.
With the many tricky projects the MCU has done justice to over the years, it's totally baffling that Feige couldn't get something as simple as an Ali-fronted Blade movie made. What a waste.
