Early on, Eddie receives a postcard from Cletus that handily details his backstory, presented to us by way of a sketched animated sequence.

Here Kasady explains that he actually died at birth but was successfully revived, leading to him murdering his grandmother as a child by pushing her wheelchair down the stairs.

Later he killed his mother by throwing a hairdryer in the bath, and it's subtly implied for a moment that he may have even killed his pet dog with a drill.

Due to all this, his abusive father sent him to St. Estes where he met Frances, who used her supernatural abilities to protect him from bullies.

Later in the film, Cletus offers up an addendum to this story, criticising Eddie for not including further details of his life in his article, namely that he was abused by his parents and grandmother, motivating his murderous acts.
