Wanna see Mickey Rourke as THE WRESTLER?

I've been baffled by this project for quite some time. Just what is "art" director Darren Aronofsky doing directing a movie about the professional sport of wrestling? With movies like PI, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM and his utterly confused visual beauty THE FOUNTAIN on his CV... he is a director destined to become a Criterion favourite in the future. A cult favourite who is more likely to fill message board discussions about the meanings of his films, than filling out theatres. So I ask again, what is he doing directing a mainstream movie about wrestling? And the word is he is still eyeing THE FIGHTER (his boxing biopic of "Irish" Mickey Ward) to direct straight after? Are we sure this is Aronofsky and not Rob Cohen? Help me out here guys, when was the last time an art director made such a left turn so early in his career? Here's lead Mickey Rourke, looking a little like Greg "The Hammer" Valentine and a hell of a lot like Diamond Dallas Page in preparation for the role no doubt. Beside him is famous wrestler Afa the Wild Samoan. Filming is currently under-way...

Also in the movie are said to be Maresi Tomei as Rourke's wife (who is just getting hotter and hotter with age) with recognisable wrestlers Greg Valentine, Ron Killings, Ernest Miller and others, although no-one contracted to the WWE are likely to be in the movie. The movie which was originally to star Nicolas Cage depicts a wrestler who is coaxed into one last match, even though his doctors say it's not a good idea. Weird project. But fascinating. source - aicn, wxw wrestling
