Obviously, it's important for the plot of WFTPOTA that Caesar's wife (seriously, though, why would they get married?) and child to be killed off, in order to unlock his rage and spirit of vengeance, but there was probably a more artful way of setting that up.

The whole human plot to take him out - which includes the betrayal of the terrified Winter the white gorilla - depends on the fact that the Apes have terrible security and basically put their crown jewels right by an open window.

Caesar's family nest is right next to the waterfall entrance to the cave, and while they could have perhaps expected some protection behind the water, they leave the human army's prime target completely unguarded. He's a complete sitting duck, protected only by flimsy patrols even when he is clearly suspicious that Winter has been compromised. It's very silly.
