War For The Planet Of The Apes: 15 WTF Moments
11. Bad Ape
In an otherwise grim and serious movie, Bad Ape sticks out like a sore thumb, and that is absolutely not a bad thing. He's a delightful breath of fresh air, touched by tragedy (hence his name) and occasionally very, very funny (thanks to Steve Zahn's wonderful performance behind the effects).
Bad Ape gets the majority of the best lines and the best moments, despite being a wholly new character - and while there's some controversy about the wrong-headed parallel between him and the Black Lives Matter movement (based on the fact that he wears an outfit that is a reference to the original POTA films), he's just a very surprising joy.
It's still slightly contradictory that he'd be so useless when called to action (though that could be down to fear), when he somehow managed to escape his former home at the zoo when his fellow apes were being slaughtered.
