War For The Planet Of The Apes Review: 10 Ups & 1 Down

9. It's One Of The Most Convincingly Bleak Blockbusters Ever Made

War For The Planet Of The Apes
20th Century Fox

This film may have a 12A/PG-13 rating, but you absolutely shouldn't take kids to go see it. War has a savagely dark tone to the point that some may even consider it too bleak for the escapist thrill-ride they may have been expecting.

While Dawn wasn't exactly a disposable rollercoaster ride, War is a mostly hauntingly serious movie, emphasising the harsh moral complexities of its characters and the unforgiving landscape they find themselves on.

Though The Dark Knight is frequently held up as one of the more tonally challenging PG-13 movies ever made, War makes it seem like child's play by comparison, packing more violence, implied and not, into a Hollywood tentpole than many actually thought possible. Bravo to Fox and Matt Reeves for getting as close to the line as possible.
