Warcraft Review – 4 Ups And 6 Downs

3. You Experience Both Sides Of The Conflict

The basic story of Warcraft is the battle between orcs and humans. And even though it€™d be very easy to just tell it from the human€™s perspective because, well, we€™re humans, we actually get to see the conflict from both sides.

In fact, if anything, we get more orc-ing about. We start the film in their world, prepping to venture over to the human realm, and much of the plot is driven by one invader€™s moral confusion. Beyond narrative balance, there€™s some cool ideas used to show this too €“ the battle tactics vary, with humans agile against their enemies€™ brute force and, in a move straight out of The Hunt For Red October, we jump from English to Orcish constantly, even in the same scene with a neat little audio effect.

The orcs are still clearly the bad guys, but it€™s not as morally binary as even the pillars of the fantasy genre make it out to be.
