Westworld: 10 Key Offbeat Westerns To Watch Next
3. The Good, The Bad, The Weird
Inspired by Sergio Leone, this frantic South Korean action flick infused the Spaghetti Western with a whole new flavour. From the title outwards, the breathless romp paid homage in a refreshing and dynamic fashion that gave the genre a kick up the saddle-worn ass.
Helmer Kim Jee-woon replaced the Good, Bad and Ugly elements of Eastwood, Van Cleef and Wallach with his own torrid trio, played by Jung Woo-sung, Lee Byung-hun and Song Kang-ho respectively. The mayhem was also relocated to late Thirties Manchuria, where the frenetic pursuit to acquire a treasure map took place.
The period was a little way away from the traditional Western timeframe, however that doesn't detract from what is a full-blown tribute to the genre, where bodies flew through the air as swiftly as the bullets.
