So, was the spirit really Lewis all along? This is another tough call, because one of the first apparitions we see in the movie is clearly female and therefore not Lewis, and even the male figure who drops the glass near the end could be anyone, because Maureen doesn't see him, the audience never sees a picture of Lewis, and nobody is listed as Lewis in the credits.

Accepting the idea that Maureen's suffering made her more in-touch with the spirit realm, it's entirely possible that a malevolent spirit felt her grief and decided to spend the movie messing with her, because that's what evil forces do.

After all, if you're a bitter spirit, what could be more fun than trolling a vulnerable human who isn't even sure if the afterlife exists?
