Few people were as affected by the night of Sharon Tate's murder as her husband Roman Polanski, who not only lost his wife but also their unborn son who was mere weeks away from birth.

Unsurprisingly, Polanski was destroyed by the tragedy, which critics believed to be reflected in the dark, difficult movies he directed in the years that followed, such as Macbeth, Chinatown, and The Tenant.

While it's impossible to know how Polanski's creative output would've differed had his wife and son lived, it's at least possible that his personal life wouldn't have been wrought with so much controversy.

In March 1977, Polanski was of course charged with committing sexual offenses, including rape, against a 13-year-old girl, resulting in him absconding from the United States and never returning.

Much of the case was centered around his mental health at the time of the alleged rape, and it's certainly not a leap to suggest his mind may have been irreparably damaged by the events of August 1969.

In the world of Tarantino's movie, it's easy to see him instead continuing to live the good life with wife and son in tow, and possibly even directing Tate to Oscar-winning success.

To be clear, that's not to discount the possibility of Polanski committing the criminal act regardless, but simply that it's decidedly less likely without so much reality-warping tragedy in his life.
