What The Critics Hated About Fantastic Beasts 2

1. Newt Is Not An Interesting Enough Hero

JK Rowling went to pretty extreme lengths to make sure that almost everybody in the Harry Potter series was complex and capable of existing at multiple points on the moral spectrum at the same time. Harry Potter himself was defined by flirtations with darkness and even the most heroic figures - Dumbledore, Ron, Lupin, Sirius - were in some way marked by bad behaviour or a dark secret. It's pretty much one of the pillars of how that series is written.

Unfortunately, critics have pointed out that Newt simply isn't that sort of hero. Perhaps because he doesn't have the necessary space to show that same sort of complexity as Potter did in his movies, Newt comes across as more one-dimensional and simply less interesting. He lacks depth, intrigue and the pillars that Rowling usually builds into her characters.

Sure, he's charming, but that doesn't seem to have been enough for the critics, who wanted more from the good-natured hero.
