Back in 2018, along with Shortland, ChloƩ Zhao also applied for the director's position for Black Widow. Yet, Marvel executives suggested that she apply for the same role for The Eternals and were reportedly so impressed by her first interview that she was offered the job immediately.

Her appointment is in-line with that of Shortland as Marvel Studios seeks to use less experienced - and arguably riskier options - to lead its next wave of films. The Eternals will only be her third release as a director after making a couple of dramas, both of which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to great critical acclaim.

Again, her back catalogue cannot be compared easily with blockbuster MCU movies. Nevertheless, if she can live up to her esteemed reputation and translate her prior success into the superhero genre, then big things are in-store for when The Eternals is released next February.
