Who Is Keri Russell Playing In Star Wars Episode 9?

1. Rey's Mother

Who are Rey's parents? It was the question for two years after The Force Awakens, and the answer Rian Johnson provided in The Last Jedi is that they're nobodies; junkers who sold her off for drinking money.

It's an answer that cuts to the bone for Rey and makes a lot of sense for her character, but it's also one that a) isn't definite yet and b) could well be revisited in some way by Abrams.

It's hard to imagine he'd go all the way and change the answer given in Episode VIII (although not impossible), but he could change the lineage so that Rey is the granddaughter or some other descendant of a Kenobi or such like. Alternatively, just to hammer home the point, it could include a flashback scene of Rey's parents.

Either way, there's a chance that we'll see Rey's folks in Episode IX, and we know Russell can do a flawed mother figure, while it's not beyond Star Wars to cast well-known actors in brief but important roles (see: Max von Sydow). We don't really need to see Rey's parents, and there's especially a danger in trying to show them because Rey's memories aren't clear (and the flashback couldn't come via anyone else), but that doesn't mean it can't or won't happen, and Russell is at least a good fit, even if it's not the best use of her talents.

Who do you think Russell will play in Episode IX? Let us know down in the comments.
