"Why are you screaming... I haven't even cut you yet!!" - full-length NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET trailer

I have to be honest and say I like it. I know I know - I'm falling for the exact same trap again but this looks way better than we were expecting. Go on, admit it. Music video director Samuel Bayer has done a superb job on the look and feel of his A Nightmare on Elm Street redo but then I guess this is to be expected after the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th were similarly gorgeous to look at. However, there's a quiet confidence with Bayer that I didn't see with hack that made the above mentioned flicks. His camera is more fluid, more bold. He isn't frantically waving it around to try and build tension, instead he lingers on the actors and on the scenes. There's a few comments from my peers saying the acting in the trailer isn't up to much and they are right, but I think that's more down to Bayer's great direction. He is challenging these guys by making them do the work of building tension and I think it might pay off during the slasher scenes.

It's the same tone he used for Rorschach, and I'm not really sold on how he is playing the character but then again, we only get a big tease. I also feel uncomfortable with the scene for scene remake parts. The bathtub hand scene, the floating murder of the young blonde, Freddy coming out of the wall. I just wish it wasn't the Nancy Meyers story again and was a reboot focusing on a new set of teens in a different situation. The Freddy Krueger mythology would have been adaptable enough for a complete creative overhaul. Having said all that, this remake seems a stepping up in quality for Platinum Dunes and they have done enough for me to be there opening night.
