4. The Cast Aren't Box Office Draws

Though it's fair to say that movie stars don't have the same commercial sway they once did, and moviegoers generally aren't seeing films for the lead actors alone, it certainly didn't help that Argylle's ensemble cast contains almost no consistent box office draws.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Bryan Cranston, and so on have been in many financially successful films, but how often was it for their presence alone?

But the biggest failure here was to center so much of the marketing campaign around Henry Cavill, despite him only being in the film for a matter of minutes and also having a pretty dismal box office record.

Cavill may be enormously popular online, but as has been proven time and time again, social media clout doesn't always translate to real-world success.

Ultimately if Argylle got everything else on this list right, the lack of commercial star wattage probably wouldn't have mattered too much, but it's nevertheless another compounding factor which harmed it out of the gate.
