Why Captain Marvel Is Going To Be A Very Different MCU Movie

2. It'll Bridge Two Of The MCU's Biggest Settings

Since fans were given the news that Infinity War would involve not only The Avengers but the Guardians of the Galaxy as well, speculation has run wild as to how the two groups would interlink. After all, James Gunn's epic sci-fi space opera is a far cry away from the rest of the MCU, both tonally and geographically. We know that Thanos is the binding agent that ensures the two elements of the MCU collide, but the bridge between this threat has until recently remained unclear.

Captain Marvel has always started off as an earthbound character faced with an extraterrestrial experience, and while you may argue we already have that link in Star Lord himself, Peter Quill, he didn't grow up on Earth. With Danvers, her introduction to a world outside of Earth comes during adulthood, and given how Nick Fury looks set to have a big role in her film, it's clear that the Captain will mark the bridge that The Avengers need to interact with a more cosmic universe - one full of infinity stones, animatronic raccoons, and tyrannical alien dictators.

Past MCU films have revelled in the opportunity to build towards bigger things (Iron Man 3 and Civil War in particular), but the responsibility resting on the Captain's shoulders is a large one indeed.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
