Why Captain Marvel Will Forever Change The MCU
1. The Time Setting
There might be some cynicism about Marvel Studios romanticising Blockbuster video when it was essentially the cause of the death of the entire independent VHS and DVD store industry, but the use of that monument to the past is a very clear reminder that this movie is set in the 1990s.
And why's that important? Well, because we've already been told by Kevin Feige that the next step in the MCU will see us visiting not only new worlds but also new time periods. Hopefully, this 1990s setting sets a precedent for Marvel to start looking backward in time a little more.
There's already a hint that Black Widow's planned solo movie will be set before she joined the Avengers and the MCU TV shows will presumably be prequels since one of their stars, Loki, is already dead and gone. Could we be looking at the advent of a whole new approach to time settings that allow for more period pieces? And might that mean we actually get a Howlin' Commandoes movie? Because if so, sign me up.
