Why DC's Flashpoint Movie Depends On Justice League's Success

Warner Bros' future plans may depend on a big win.

Though it has seemed for a while that Warner Bros have their future plans for the "DCEU" and other stand-alone movies pretty firmly mapped out, there's now some suggestion that the future expansions depend on Justice League doing well both critically and commercially.

According to Variety reporter Justin Kroll - who appeared on Meet the Movie Press this week - Warner Bros.’ current thinking regarding the future of their shared universe is centred very much on their next big release. He says that they are waiting to see how well Justice League does before they actively move forward on the plan to do multiple movies a year. At this stage, the studio have cooled down their pursuit of directors for Flashpoint and other projects with one eye fixed on Justice League.

It shouldn't really come as too much of a surprise that Justice League would be considered a foundation stone for the rest of the plans for DC properties - after all it will introduce the characters who are designed to take on the next "phase" of movies, and if they aren't deemed popular immediately, there's little point pursuing plans around them.

It's also a line of thinking that has already been explored by Forbes' Mark Hughes, so it's not exactly unprecedented. And two sources is pretty much your best indication that it's a real thing.

Kroll added that Warner Bros might be consciously moving away from solo movies, which would explain why Flashpoint was chosen in place of The Flash. Having multiple big characters in one place (even alternate reality versions) is not a bad thing, and it should guarantee a bigger box office boost. But let's just hope that it gets off the ground at all, if the studio have reservations about their future plans.
