Writers across the world will always find unique ways to present their antagonists, but at the end of the day, the best writers understand that even the more disgusting people in society are people first and punching bags second.

We’ve come a long way from the villains who make elaborate schemes and say “Foiled again” after they’ve been beaten, but even the most entertaining of those scenarios have to fall by the wayside eventually.

The idea of a villain might have a bit of a different look in 2020, but the core understanding is still intact. These villains aren’t necessarily bad, but being evil is an adjective, not a personality trait. You’re never going to run out of conflict in cinema, but evil is not the person with a greedy scheme anymore.

Evil is a concept first and foremost, and as time has gone on, movies have been centered around how that concept can corrupt you or make you a better person for having defeated it.
