Why Robin Hood Just Flopped So Hard
9. Box Office Competition
In the UK, Robin Hood only faced competition from The Girl In The Spider's Web, Nativity Rocks!, Nobody's Fool and Assassination Nation - only the first of which has any sort of hype. But in the US, it faced stiff Thanksgiving competition that would have destroyed more superior films.
Both Creed II and Ralph Breaks The Internet landed and were far more obvious Thanksgiving releases, while The Front Runner was expanded for the slightly more grown-up crowd. In all three of those movies, audiences were catered to better for what Robin Hood was trying to do: Creed II with the action angle AND the underdog hero rising up, Ralph for family audiences and The Front Runner for adults looking for something more politically allegorical.
In that crowded marketplace, Robin Hood was never going to win, even if it had been a far better film. It's not the kind of film you go to see on Thanksgiving (not least because it's a tiny bit mean-spirited and a lot cocky and unlikeable at its heart) and it was never going to compete with the might of brands like Rocky and Disney.
