Why The Mummy (1999) Is The PERFECT Action Movie
5. The Chemistry
As has been previously stated, if you a movie-goer doesn't care about the characters, they won't care about the consequences. So thank goodness that the Mummy made sure to bring in some incredibly likable actors in the film. One of the best pairs in the film is the romantic leads, Rick and Evelyn.
It's a classic case of stereotypical opposites attracting: Rick is a brash, cocky, swaggering American. Evelyn is the embodiment of a stuffy, prudish librarian. While they naturally start up assuming the worst out of one another, those views are challenged over time.
Evelyn, in particular, demonstrates that she is incredibly capable in a field environment, and simply had never been afforded the chance. Rick, for his part, allowed her to flourish, never really talking down to her when it came to her displaying her intelligence and resourcefulness.
Rick, for his part, is given a chance to find something more to care about in Evelyn, an understated part of the film considering his abandonment of this compatriots when serving in the Foreign Legion, as well as a chance to close a chapter on his life
The best part about these two is that they're equals. He's the physical side, while she's the intellectual, but together they are far more capable than they are alone. Couple that with the terrific banter between the two of , and you can't help but root for them to get together.
