Why The Uncharted Movie Took 10 YEARS To Film
2018 - Uncharted Film Releases, But Not That One
In 2018 Allan Ungar decided to make the Uncharted movie everybody wanted. Starring Nathan Fillion as Drake the short fan film revitalised interest in the waning Sony project. It’s not tied to the official project, but you should definitely watch it here.
2019 - Dan Trachtenberg Joins To Direct. Then Travis Knight Joined To Direct.
Dan Trachtenberg, director of 10 Cloverfield Lane and an episode of Black Mirror, joined in early 2019 to direct with another - yes, another - rewrite of the script being made by Mark Walker and Jonathan Rosenberg. Filming schedules were unable to be set, with Holland’s press tour for Spiderman: Far From Home interrupting proceedings. Before long Trachtenberg also left the project.
At this point Sony upped their game, creating PlayStation Productions to take lessons from the example set by Marvel, with Uncharted set to be their maiden feature.
Later in 2019 Travis Knight, riding high from Bumblebee, was brought on for directing duties. The original choice for Drake, Mark Wahlberg, rejoined as Sully - the ten-year interval apparently transforming the action star into a smooth, cigar wielding conman. Knight eventually left the project at the end of 2019, citing scheduling conflicts caused by Holland’s commitment to Spiderman 3.
2020 - The End Of Delays
The Uncharted project is now in, ah-hem, uncharted waters. Filming is scheduled to begin in around four weeks, only there is no official announcement as to who will be directing. Sony’s target for the movie is reportedly Ruben Fleischer who delivered Sony the well-received but critically panned darling Venom.
The filming schedule will likely leave little opportunity for Fleischer to be anything more meaningful than a gun for hire, with no ability to immerse himself in the project and pre-production, however that doesn’t necessarily mean the film will suffer because of it.
So, after that read - and congratulations to those of you who made it - are you still excited for the Uncharted film? Or do you feel the ship has sailed on the popularity of the franchise? Let us know your comments below.
