Will Liam Neeson Have A Death Wish For Joe Carnahan?

Always the best day to reveal your future plans as a director and start pitching your next film is on the day your latest flick is at the top of the box office. With his latest actioner The Grey sitting pretty as king of the weekend with $20 million out of the blocks, The L.A. Times reports that Joe Carnahan has been hired to write & direct a remake of the Charles Bronson starring 1974 classic Death Wish. The remake is setup at Paramount and MGM and is promised to be a 'wholly different take' on the concept of a New York man turning vigilante after his wife was murdered and daughter brutally attacked. Previously Sylvester Stallone was trying to crack a remake (which would have suited him down to the ground) but that was about five years ago and he has since moved on The Expendables and other things. The original Death Wish was helmed by Michael Winner and was a big crowd pleaser, especially finding large audiences in the UK. They were were starring vehicles for Bronson who appeared in four sequels to Death Wise over a two decade period (the last one in 1994 when Bronson & the series was getting on in age) and it influenced a whole genre, most recently still being ripped off by Jodie Foster's The Brave One, Kevin Bacon's Death Sentence and the box office smash Taken. Speaking of Taken, what odds on Joe Carnahan wanting his grizzled star Liam Neeson to lead Death Wish? I'd say the chances are pretty high, especially as Neeson has basically done variations on the Death Wish concept a million times lately to good success and it's definitely in his wheelhouse. Carnahan used Neeson in The A-Team and The Grey and has probably been attracted to the property with the intention of bringing of turning it into a franchise vehicle for Neeson. With The Grey producer Jules Daly and Ridley and Tony Scott's Scott Free Prods on board, I'm sure they'll be reaching out to Neeson soon (if they haven't already).
