Will you SCREAM 4 a Tuesday?

Dimension Films has given "Scream 4" a April 12th 2011 release date; which these days may as well be a Summer opening. Interestingly, April 12th actually falls on a Tuesday; which is really odd but I would love nothing more than a midnight 11.59pm nationwide opening. What better way to promote the return of "Scream" than with a midnight party, full of ghostface costumes, tubs of popcorn and fake flimsy knives. Oh wait, maybe that's not such a safe idea (by the way, anyone who saw "Scream 2" opening night in theatres... wasn't that scene amazing). "Scream 4" films this Spring, so expect the casting of the fresh faced young actors to be announced soon (most likely, we won't have heard of them). The last movie in the franchise; "Scream 3" was released Feb 2000, over 11 years ago by the time the new movie is in theatres. So just why should we care about a fourth movie after so long... 1) Creator Kevin Williamson (whose script for the original was kind of amazing) has returned. This is the guy who started with a blank page before creating the mythology of Woodsboro and all the characters within it; and sometime over the past two years he got the idea and the passion to write another three movies. Williamson has something to say, and we should care to listen given his track record. 2) It's not a reboot and keeps continuity. Also the trio of main players return (Neve Campbell, David & Courtney Arquette), which has to be a good sign for the quality of the screenplay because over the years they have distanced themselves from the series. 3) Wes Craven directs! And after a big break from a franchise (his second Freddy movie ten years after the original with "New Nightmare" is the best sequel to that franchise) he has shown before he can come back and deliver the goods. 4) Horror movies have changed A LOT in the past ten years, and in the post-Asian horror explosion, post-slasher remakes, torture porn, etc; there's lots and lots for Williamson to dissect and deconstruct. By the way, in case you missed it; in my June 09 article "Scream's New Nightmare" - I outlined exactly how I would have handled "Scream 4". Don't worry, it's not the actual plot. Just the way I would have done it.
