Williamson gives a SCREAM 4 update

He is currently finishing off the third act of Scream 4 - a reunion movie that will kick off a brand new trilogy for the franchise.

Things have changed quite significantly with Scream 4 over the past couple of months. The change of tactics came when Neve Campbell took a big U-Turn and decided her career could do with an exposure boost by agreeing to return, setting up a situation that is very reminiscent of the Ghostbusters 3 reunion, where the new film will act as a passing of the torch flick. The old gang from the movies past, and the new gang who will straddle up and push the franchise forward for the next five years. No longer will it just be small supporting cameos from David Arquette and Courtney Cox-Arquette, this has now become a movie where Arquette, Cox and Campbell have a much larger part in a bigger ensemble.

"The fourth one is an ensemble. It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in Woodsboro. We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more. We'll also be introducing a little group, a little ensemble of new castmembers. That'll take us through the next three."
Williamson, the creator of the Scream franchise is currently writing the third act of Scream 4 and it's said he is contractually obliged to pen a fifth movie for The Weinsteins. Wes Craven presumably is still awaiting a final draft before he agrees upon a return to the director's chair (which I think it's a given he will) but in the unlikely event that he turns The Weinsteins down then I'm going to make an early suggestion that they could do no worse than hiring Patrick Lussier. Lussier was the editor on the Scream and Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street movies, a quietly praised job but one he particularly excelled at with that franchise and this year he helmed My Bloody Valentine 3-D, which was a kick-ass slasher movie. We know also that Scream 4 will incorporate 3-D to the mix, so I would suggest he's gotta be the leading contender. In any event, once the script is done we should start to hear a start date on this one (could be as early as January to film), and the movie should be out late next year.
