Wonder Woman: 10 Reasons It's Actually Overrated

1. A Lot Of The Humour Falls Flat

Granted, it's a good thing that the studio decided to give Wonder Woman a far lighter tone than that of its predecessors, namely Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. It's a welcomed antidote to the dour antics of previous DC Cinematic Universe flicks, for sure, though the choice does bring about some negatives.

Namely, the fact that Wonder Woman is trying so hard to be light and affable that many of the jokes simply fall flat - especially when they're essentially the same jokes, over and over again, most of which involve Diana's fish out of water status.

For example, Diana is repeatedly told that she's incredibly beautiful as a kind of running gag, but this quickly becomes tiring to hear. In other cases, jokes are dragged out, like the one on the boat where Diana and Trevor debate whether he should sleep next to her. It goes on for too long, and so the humour is lost.

There's a clawing, desperate feel to a lot of the gags, too, like the screenwriter was trying to channel the freewheeling fun of a Marvel Cinematic Universe flick and came up short. Sameer, for example, is deployed as comic relief, but we've seen variations of this quirky Arab character in countless films; it's hardly progressive.
