Wonder Woman 1984: 10 Major New Reveals From The Set Visits
3. Less Of A Sequel, More Of A Standalone Story
A couple of years ago at San Diego Comic-Con, Patty Jenkins confused everyone when she said that Wonder Woman 1984 wasn't a sequel. Speculation soon ran rampant that the filmmaker was using the movie as an opportunity to reboot and retcon the character's role in the DCEU, and that appears to be true to an extent (she's certainly not been in hiding like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice claimed).
However, on set, no one really seemed to like using the word "sequel." Roven repeatedly referrerd to Wonder Woman 1984 as a "standalone adventure," adding: "[Jenkins] wanted to make sure that we had the character in a universe that was standalone so that we can continue her character without having to weave the other characters. We wanted to make sure we could deal with her themes."
The producer later said that part of the reason this movie had to be set before Man of Steel was because everything in the DCEU "evolved from that." As for Jenkins, she says: "I’m not a huge fan of doing Chapter 2 of a seven-chapter story. I feel like that may happen in the way background [of the DC franchise], but every movie in my opinion that I want to make should be its own great movie."
