If my big theory is correct, this airborne attack sequence comes right at the start of the film when Steve Trevor has infiltrated a German air-based and steals a plane to do as much damage to his enemy as possible.
It would then make sense that his attempted escape involves taking some damage and crashing onto Wonder Woman's beach.
As if to confirm, here's Trevor seemingly stealing the plane he flies to fire on the base...
