20 Horror Movies Ruined By TERRIBLE Reveals
7. The Ghost of Mary Shelley Possesses Ida - The Bride!
In retrospect it's not remotely surprising that the marketing for Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! totally ignored its most controversial element, no matter that it's revealed at the very start of the movie.
Not merely a punk-rock reimagining of Bride of Frankenstein, the narrative is actually framed by the ghost of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley (also played by Jessie Buckley), who decides to tell the story she always wanted to tell by possessing protagonist Ida (Buckley), a woman living in 1930s Chicago.
It's one hell of an ambitious idea but one that ultimately doesn't really work, with Jessie Buckley's erratic switching between Ida's Chicago drawl and Shelley's English twang proving more irritating than entertaining.
It's easy to respect the big swing Gyllenhaal took here, but it proves to be a hurdle the rest of the movie never manages to get over.
