There's a comment in the film from Mystique when she clashes with Xavier over how much the X-Men's agenda and profile have changed (she accuses him of enjoying being famous too much) about the team's new costumes. She effectively calls them silly.

But the costumes are, of course, a loving homage to the comics. The new costumes are drawn from the famous Frank Quietly designs from the New X-Men, which was penned by Grant Morrison. Like Matthew Vaughn's First Class, Morrison's new take on the X-Men reimagined the X-Men for the 21st century with a snazzy new look.

That film also drew its costumes from the comics, but these Dark Phoenix costumes are the most “accurate” X-Men costumes that have ever appeared on film. About time too.
