Cypher is just one of many characters who made up the core line-up of the early New Mutants team. His time to shine really came after he died and (SPOILERS!) Warlock bonded with him, infecting him so that he was ressurected as the half-Cypher, half-Warlock named Douglock (after Cyphers real name, Doug Ramsey). Before either of them even joined, however, the New Mutants included Sam Guthrie: a good old boy from Kentucky, a proud mamas boy, who is nigh-invulnerable when hes blasting through the air. He worked alongside Sunspot, who gained super-strength by absoring energy from the sun. Yes, like Superman. Then there was Wolfsbane, a Catholic who transformed into a werewolf-like creature and had a lot of guilt about it; Mirage, who could could create visual empathic three-dimensional illusions; and they were all lead by the 19-year-old Karma, who could mentally possess other peoples bodies. A formidable bunch.
