The release of X-Men: Apocalypse marks the ninth entry into 20th Century Fox's hugely successful X-Men franchise, escalating the mutant conflict to a whole new level even if it does deliver another tiresome, cliched villain who fails to make the most of the incredibly talented Oscar Isaac.

While Isaac's performance may have left fans wanting more from the character, a retrospective take on the previous outings for the X-Men shows up a real mixed bag of acting, not least on account of the franchise's huge roster of characters who have appeared since the first instalment in 2000. Despite making an obscene amount of money, the franchise has seen far from plain sailing.

Casting for superhero movies requires a level of casting precision above and beyond most movies, mostly because of the existing expectations of the fanbase. Pleasing everyone can be a delicate balancing act, and deciding on an actor who not only embodies the character physically but can bring an actual performance in traditional terms is even more difficult.

Inevitably, there have been failures as well as major highs, and the spread between the two is incredibly broad for such a successful franchise. In celebration of Apocalypse and the franchise in general, this week's Awesome/Sucked column is dedicated to X-Men actors...
