Possibly the most ambitious comic based film to date, Joker delves into the chilling origin story of Arthur Fleck, following the transition from his sheltered life as a failing comedian and clown-for-hire, to his rapid ascension to the symbol of the Gotham City riots.
The only way to describe the masterpiece that Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix have created is a mash up between Fight Club and Taxi Driver with bone-chilling laughter throughout.
It took a brave man to take on the role of the Joker, and Phoenix’s portrayal is completely unique, showing a man who mistakenly becomes a symbol of uprising, when all he wanted to do was bring joy and laughter to the world. Joker highlights a much wider psychological agenda and explores the idea of nature verses nurture. The film in reality is a very dark psychological thriller surrounding the downfall of a mentally ill man who feels abandoned by society.
While Joker pulls some loose connections from ‘The Killing Joke’, Todd Phillips aimed to create the majority of the backstory from scratch without any major influences from past incarnations of the Clown Prince of Crime.
The Oscar buzz is real! But how well do you know this modern day masterpiece?
