J R R Tolkien's masterpiece trilogy The Lord of the Rings follows the story of some Frodo Baggins and his fellow Hobbits as they quest to destroy the one ring that would summon the return of the dark lord Sauron. Originally released as a trilogy of books almost 70 years ago now, The Lord of the Rings have been classed as perhaps the most popular piece of written work in any genre, not just fantasy.
This popularity was capitalized on by film director Peter Jackson, who's wish was to bring Tolkien's fantasy epic to life on the big screen. Forty seven years after the release of the books, Jackson made his dream come true with the release of The Fellowship Of The Ring.
Two more successful films followed with The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
The success from these movies is highly credited to not just the vision of Jackson, but the lore and history behind the trilogy. There is such depth to the world of Middle Earth and so much history to its lands and many characters.
