4. Spec Ops: The Line
Spec Ops flew under almost everyone’s radar. Another military third-person cover shooter, oh and there’s Nolan North again, how unique.
Well, guess what, it actually was unique. It deals with the harsh, mind-bending circumstances of war that are suffered by your standard soldiers. It showcases this through gruesome scenarios and player made choices.
The motivation and effects of said choices are often muddied beforehand to better blur the lines of war. A great example of this is when white phosphorous comes into the mix, as well as the potential for civilians.
The story is awesome. It’s inspired by Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, which although well-known, is a refreshing portrayal when placed in a video game. The game takes a dive when the reality sets in that you’ll be slogging through deserts and the same sand-ridden city for around ten hours.
Enemy AI is cowardly, at best, meaning that harder difficulties require you to act the same if you want to stay alive.
Duck behind cover, peek, shoot, run, repeat. It’s not the most engaging gameplay loop but luckily, it’s supplemented by a great story and an interesting camaraderie between you and your allies.
