Up until Super Mario 3D World, multiplayer in Mario games either didn't exist or just didn't work very well. Though it's possible to play the New Super Mario Bros. 2D platformer series with other people, the experience is pretty mixed. The 2D space just doesn't really allow for players to have an enjoyable, coherent time.

All that changed, however, with the release of Super Mario 3D World, the first ever 3D main series Mario game to be multiplayer. Though the levels are linear, the new space afforded by three dimensions improves the experience substantially, allowing players to work concurrently rather than always getting in each other's way.

Not only that, but the points system and promise of a shiny crown at the end of each level for whoever has the most gives the whole thing a humorous, competitive edge.

That's not even mentioning the incredible single player campaign, which features some of the most inventive Mario levels ever conceived.
