6. Earth Defense Force 2017

There aren’t too many video games that embrace the inherently silly premise behind giant monsters and alien invasions, but the 2007 Xbox 360 classic Earth Defense Force 2017 does so with such sincere affection it makes for one seriously weird and delightfully entertaining game.

You play as a soldier of the Earth Defense Force, deployed when the Earth is invaded by UFOs and an unending army of gigantic bugs and other monstrosities. The mission thus is simple: kill everything that moves.

When you’re not mowing down hordes of ants and destroying half of the city in the process (which is ridiculously fun), you get to enjoy one of the most ham-fisted, laugh-inducing plots you’ll ever witness, made all the more so by charmingly campy voice acting.

The simple, arcade-style gameplay makes this a game anyone can pick up and play; great for cooperative play and parties. Its silly and exaggerated style is such that it is sure to leave an impression on anyone who plays it. EDF 2017 may lack the polish and sophistication of other games, but that, along with the sheer ridiculousness of its being, is what makes it so endearing.
