5. Luigi Dies In Luigi's Mansion

It€™s long been rumoured that Luigi€™s Mansion was initially intended to be a much darker game, a game designed around more mature themes, such as suicide. Understandably, Nintendo eventually decided upon a more agreeable tone, likely to avoid distancing a significant portion of their own audience.

The result was something of a hybrid, a game equal parts inoffensive and unnerving, an utterly innocuous experience contradicted by its own unsettling undertones.

After the boss fight with Boolossus for instance, Luigi receives several phone calls regarding lighting strikes and power shortages. During one of the calls, a flash of lightning causes Luigi€™s shadow to become distorted, as though he were hanging by his neck from the rafters. Though many have explained this distortion as a mere graphical glitch, others have theorised the possibility that Luigi was actually killed during his encounter with Boolossus, and that the flash of lightning represents his transitioning into the next life.
